The 8×8 Board Setup
Checkers World is played on an authentic 8×8 grid with 64 total squares. All play takes place strictly on the 32 dark playable squares.
8×8 Grid Layout
8 rows by 8 columns. The 32 dark diagonal squares are the only valid positions for pieces to occupy, move across, or jump over.
12 Pieces Per Player
Player A controls 12 Red pieces (occupying rows 0, 1, and 2). Player B controls 12 Black pieces (occupying rows 5, 6, and 7).
Empty Center Rows
The two middle rows (rows 3 and 4) start completely empty, creating the open battleground where opening tactics and trades unfold.
Piece Movement, Captures & Promotion
Learn the essential movement rules, mandatory jumping requirements, and coronation of King pieces.
Normal Forward Movement
A regular piece (man) moves diagonally forward exactly one square into an unoccupied dark playable square. Regular pieces cannot step backwards.
Capturing Opponents
A piece captures by jumping diagonally over an adjacent opponent piece into the immediately following empty square. The jumped piece is permanently removed.
Mandatory Captures
If any legal capture is available on your turn, you must capture. A player cannot make an ordinary move when an opponent piece can be jumped.
Multiple Capture Chains
If the landing square of a capture allows the same piece to jump another opponent piece, the player must continue jumping until no further captures exist.
King Coronation
When a piece reaches the opponent's back row (row 7 for Player A, row 0 for Player B), it is immediately crowned with a golden crown and becomes a King.
King Powers & Mobility
Kings command the board: they move diagonally both forward and backward, and can jump and capture opponent pieces in all 4 diagonal directions.
Victory & Draw Conditions
A match in Checkers World concludes decisively under the following official conditions:
Win by Elimination
A player wins immediately when they jump and remove all 12 pieces belonging to the opponent.
Win by Blockade
If the opponent has pieces remaining on the board but cannot make any legal move (all pieces are blocked), they lose by blockade.
Win by Timeout / Forfeit
If an opponent lets their 20–30s turn timer expire or deliberately disconnects, they forfeit the match and victory is awarded to you.
Draw by 40-King-Move Rule
When 40 consecutive King moves occur without any piece being captured or any regular man piece advancing, the match is declared a draw.
Mutual Draw Agreement
Both players can mutually agree to offer and accept a draw at any point during equalized endgame positions.
Equal Rating on Draws
A draw preserves ratings without deductions, providing a fair outcome when both players demonstrate equal defensive mastery.
Frequently Asked Rules Questions
Can regular pieces capture backward?
No. Regular pieces (men) only move forward and capture forward. Once a piece is crowned as a King, it gains the power to capture both forward and backward.
Can I choose not to jump an opponent?
No. Captures are mandatory in tournament Checkers and Dama. If a jump is available, the game requires you to execute it.
Can a King jump across the whole board?
Kings in Checkers World jump adjacent pieces and land on the immediate empty square beyond. Flying kings (sliding across multiple open squares) are not part of the standard 8×8 regulation.
How much time do I have for each turn?
In Ranked 1v1 Arena, each turn has a 20–30 second clock. In offline AI and Pass & Play modes, there is no time pressure—play at your own pace.
